When I was a kid, my grandparents kept a milk cow so that they could enjoy the pleasures of fresh milk. They tried to convince me that this raw product was better than the kind that came in cartons. Despite their best efforts, I was never converted to their way of thinking.

After reading Steven Revare's Raw, a Novel, though, I'm thinking I may have missed out on something special back then. Thankfully, I didn't miss out on this quirky novel. Raw follows Carl Krauthammer as he attempts to exchange his accounting career path for that of a writer's. After the collapse of his marriage, he leaves the East Coast Manhattan for the Midwestern Manhattan, Kansas, in order to study under the tutelage of his favorite novelist, Julian Frye. Carl imagines that life will be simpler back in Kansas; he couldn't be more wrong. Instead, he finds a town full of breast-feeding activists, aggressive philosophy students, and the same corporate cogs he thought he'd left back in that other Manhattan. Of course, he also discovers an illegal dairy that sells raw milk and other dairy products, which is the source of the novel's title.

Every character in this novel is as familiar as they are unique. Julian Frye reminded me of a burnt-out author who taught creative writing at the university I attended. Carl's girlfriend, Susan Hirschman, bore a strong resemblance to many of my feminist professors. However, the quirks that Mr. Revare gives these and his other characters are inspired.

Raw has done something my grandparents never could - it has made me wish I could try fresh milk. There must be something magical about the stuff for it to inspire such a funny, fantastic book.

I have not read any other books by the author, but will try to find some. You will not be disappointed if you read this.
A well written tales of the old west. The yarn is filled with action and suspense which keeps the reader interested.
Written in the style of the old masters, and comparable to Hemingway, this book was masterful. Each description allows the minds eye to envision with clarity the scene laid forth. The dialogue is that of conversation and not stilted writing. Enjoyed it!
Steven Revare is a unique voice in American humor writing. Some try to out-guffaw Dave Barry's jocular meanderings to non-sequitur hilarity. Others follow Dennis Miller's sub-referencing of pop culture down to a tersely worded frog gig. Steven has strengths in both camps but brings something particularly special

A plot.

This isn't a funny collection of essays (Sedaris), a stand-up bit with a cigar and decanter of Scotch (White) or a wheezy exultation of passive-aggressive culture (Keillor). It's a novel, a story that is engaging, smart and original. A raw-milk conspiracy! Lactivists! It's a truly original premise. Not a Freemason or glittery vampire to be found, hallelujah. And it's set in the great Midwest - flyover country for some, home for many of us - the most under-represented region in American novels.

Its characters actually grow, change, interact, spark, resonate. Krauthammer could be any of us in middle age who have known success, however empty, and then search for meaning. (Although most of us would seek it in an ashram, a new religion or an old Harley - certainly not Manhattan, Kansas.) Julian Frye is the mentor-from-afar we've all had - who never fail in being both flawed and potent. Anyone on the other side of divorce knows Ex-Elizabeth. And all of us who've found love know Susan - and know that women keep their secrets.

And yes, it's hilarious. The word-play sneaks up and tweaks your nose. The subtle pretenses, as you read, become even more subtle, more nuanced - to the point that I would not recommend drinking milk (raw or otherwise) while reading, as it will squirt out your nose.

It's a great romp. A fun book. Worth the download and then some - if only to meet The Flanesser...

Did I mention it has a plot?
The Mounties always get there man and find away to turn things right for truth and fairness. We will always need people to keep law and order.
A lot of people in Manhattan, Kansas, have a drinking problem. Their preferred drink is white, comes from a cow, can be drunk warm or cold, makes a great soft cheese, and is chock full of essentials. It is also as illegal as absinthe. Enter Carl Krauthammer, fresh from a promising career in business in the Big Apple with an estranged wife called Ex-Elizabeth and an apartment he can't seem to sell. Carl enrolls as a grad student at Kansas State University and he meets a host of characters any real grad student will recognize the professor who sleeps with her students between semesters; philosophy department clones; the pseudo-intellectual grad student who is there only to teach the professors what they don't know; the over-the-hill professor who badly needs another publication to achieve tenure and needs a grad student to do most of the work for him. Reading Steven Revare is a little like listening to a Dennis Miller monologue, which is a wonderful thing. He references a lot of show-biz, literary and political terms in his similes and metaphors, as does Miller. In fact, he used to write for Dennis Miller. His writing style is a delight to read and his book, Raw, has a plot and sub-plots that will keep the reader's eyes glued to the pages. While I would agree that Raw may prove to be "not for everyone," (what book is?) I give it five stars because it was definitely "for me."
Historic novels are not my cup of tea normally. However, this one held my interest because the narrative followed a logical chain of events and concluded with good triumphing over evil.
